It’s time to go. We are all loaded up and heading off to Austin now. I can’t believe I’m sad leaving here. I married my husband in February of 2008 and entered the world of military which was complete culture shock after living a very different lifestyle in Los Angeles. I traded in a carefree, fun in the sun way of living for a more serious and yes, very “unglam” way of life. While my friends on the west coast were drinking martinis and waking up to beauty all around them, I learned to live completely opposite! It was one hell of a shock to be brutally honest!
On the upside, I saw what true bravery and courage was, not only from the soldiers here but the spouses and kids who had to go on and keep things working like clock work while their husband, wife or parent went off to “work” in Iraq or Afghanistan. I never did hear anyone say; “this isn’t fair, he/she shouldn’t have to do that job or go over there.” Everyone just musters up some strength and deals with it. That was amazing and impressive to see.
What I’ll miss most is the relentless loads of support and team spirit and my girlfriends Dani and Natalie who had the same ups and downs of fear and strength during deployments. I don’t know if any woman could hold a candle to these two! I’m proud to have them as friends. “LNSDQ!”
As we drive on to Texas now and return to civilian life, I will be humming along to some happy tunes and thanking my lucky stars that my husband made it through all those missions and came home safe. I wish that for everyone’s somebody who’s out there fighting for our freedom. Hell yeah, let freedom ring!
