Am I a professional photographer? No. Am I in love with taking photographs? Absolutely! Do I own more camera equipment than the average Jane? Definitely… ridiculously eccentric!

I have a great deal of admiration and respect for today’s photographers. Scott Kelby is my go-to guru for all things Photoshop, Lightroom and digital photography. I’ve taken classes in college but still, I wouldn’t call myself a photographer! That’s just waaaay too huge a title that I’m not worthy of! So what am I then? I’m a digital photographic artist as a hobby and designer and marketing girl by day. I lug my camera bag and all the wondrous toys inside of it everywhere I go and shoot anything and everything from a crack in the sidewalk to a leaf on the ground and a sky full of clouds to the bird that soars above the trees. Oh, and I’m not shy about doing what it takes to get that great shot (I haven’t been run over by a moving vehicle yet!). That hard-to-get shot might just be the best print or greeting card I create! Yes, I love Photoshop.
On a typical day, here’s my process from start to finish to create a piece of art…
- Wake up, grab a mug of freshly brewed coffee, load camera bag, throw on flip flops and head out before it gets too hot or too bright to shoot.
- Get a few shots of some blooms, birdies, crystal blue water in the pool, a wrought iron fence, a dog or two on their morning stroll, puffy clouds, bugs, etc.
- Come home, upload shots, grab another coffee and edit shots to 3000 px x 2000 px @ 300 dpi. Save them in a “Master Copies” folder.
- Edit faves in Lightroom and Photoshop to create several variations ranging from B&W and cartoonish to subtle, watercolor and oil painting. There are literally thousands of choices.
- Upload a few to blog.
- Start blending multiple photos to create a piece of art.
- Prepare and send to printer, get them back, create matted and framed art, photo art cards, prints, etc.
- Upload finished products to my store.
I also use attribution-free stock photography for my designs.
So that’s it! I absolutely love each moment that I have the precious time to sit and create. It’s simply divine!
