Thank you, President Bush

As I watched the President’s farewell speech last night, I had to disagree with his comments on the optimism of the incoming President and the future. If you missed the speech, you can watch the video and read the transcript online.

I’m more fearful for the security and financial well-being of this country than I have been in the last 8 years during the Bush administration. Nobody can deny that President Bush kept us safe since 9|11 or the tax cuts that many middle class Americans benefited from during his administration. Especially meaningful to me was his admiration and respect for our troops; my husband and his friends being amongst America’s finest. Although there have been mistakes made just as there have been and will be in past and future administrations, it will take history to prove in time that this President’s decisions on war were the right ones. In the meantime, I hope to see the Republican party get back on track with its principles as it was during the Reagan administration.

In November, I had the chance to see President Bush speak at Fort Campbell. I doubt I will ever witness a President more supportive and thankful of our military. His passion for the security of this country and all those who defend her couldn’t be denied, even by those who disagree with him, dislike him or refuse to acknowledge his efforts to fight our enemy. Personally, I am thankful for a President who refused to back down and accept another attack on our country.

After President Bush spoke, I was asked by a news channel reporter how I felt about the incoming President. My response; “No comment. Absolutely no comment.” Meanwhile, I was standing there thinking about the homeland security I’ve felt for the last 8 years that I will no longer feel so confident about with this incoming administration.

I have a girlfriend in Vancouver who emailed me recently saying; “Won’t you be glad when this war is over and you have your husband home rather than fighting a war?” Amazing how people sitting on the sidelines without even knowing anyone fighting this war assume that our military members would want to sit home rather than defend our country. Come live my life as a military spouse and then fire off your emails. Nobody wants to see their loved one(s) go off to fight a war (for the very freedom that allows people to say such things). It sucks and it’s scary every day that they are away. But if they don’t go off and fight for our country and prevent another horrific 9|11 attack, who will?

So to you, President Bush, I am thankful for your well meaning and bravery to stand up to such radical terrorists. I’m so glad I married a fellow-Texan who also stands for what he believes. God bless you.
