Waiting in Pain (Canadian Healthcare Reality)

My parents were planning to drive to Florida yesterday morning from their hometown in Ontario. They planned to vacation for a week before driving to see us and celebrate Sophia’s first birthday on February 7th. My mom fell and broke her leg on the way out the door and it was a pretty bad break. She was admitted into the hospital and was scheduled to be operated on last night. Apparently she needs to have a plate put in her leg.

My father just called and told me that they can’t fit her in for the operation until Thursday because they are backed up with more critical patients. Can you hear me yelling? She is in her 70′s, lying in a hospital bed in discomfort and jacked up on morphine until they have time to operate. I feel terrible for her.

<Climbing on my soapbox…> If a country with only 33 million citizens can’t make a socialized healthcare system work so that their citizens can get the healthcare they deserve, how exactly can the United States make it work? Please, explain it to me because I am not getting it. It’s just going to be a dead end road to try and make socialized  healthcare work here. <…okay, soapbox rant complete>.
